In January 2011, the City University of New York (CUNY) Board of Trustees passed a comprehensive tobacco-free campus policy that will go into effect in September 2012. As the nation’s largest urban public university, CUNY’s new policy will impact the health of more than 500,000 students and nearly 40,000 faculty and staff. Thanks to ARRA funding, the NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) has worked closely with CUNY’s Office of Student Affairs and School of Public Health, providing assistance with policy development and implementation as well as offering expanded cessation services to the CUNY community on all 23 campuses.
Luis Manzo, PhD, University Director, Mental Health and Wellness Services, says, “the ARRA funding has made a significant impact on our ability to implement this far-reaching policy throughout our very large and diverse system. There is a strong connection between health and educational achievement. We want our students to be healthy and succeed!” Not only has Luis been working to make big changes throughout the CUNY campuses in New York City but, thanks to ARRA funding, he also shared his experience with other cities and municipalities by providing information at the Communities Putting Prevention to Work Mentoring Workshop held in October 2011. This workshop brought together fellow ARRA-funded groups from around the country, and CUNY’s progress was highlighted.
